Legend Of Kanya Devi Temple

Legend has it that Kanya Devi did penance to obtain the hand of Lord Siva. Hence The Lord Shiva set out from Suchindram for the wedding, due to take place at midnight. The celestial gods however wanted Kanya Devi to remain a virgin so that she could retain her full allocation of shakti or divine powers. To achieve this they hatched a plot and Narada assuming the form of a cock crowed. Shiva, thinking it was already dawn and that he was late for the auspicious time of the ceremony, went back home.

According to legends, the rice and cereals meant for the marriage remained uncooked. Even today, stones that look exactly like rice and cereals are available in the market. It is a common belief that these stones are the leftovers of the legendary marriage, which could not be solemnized. As the marriage could not take place, Kanya Devi became a virgin goddess
