The Kukke Subramanya Temple is located in the village of Subramanya, dedicated to Lord Subramanya, the Son of Lord Shiva. In the Skanda Purana it is stated that Lord Subramanya washed the blade of his weapon 'Shakti' in the Dhara (Kumaradhara) River here after killing the demon Tarakasura and his brothers. It is said in the Skanda Purana that Samba, the son of Sri Krishna, was cured of leprosy in Subramanya.
There is a major Subramanya Temple here. In the main shrine of this temple are the deities of Subramanya, Vasuki, and Sesa. There are also many other deities in this temple. In the southeast part of this temple there is a Narasimha Deity and a Narasimha shalagram, called Vedavyasa Samputa Narasimha Devaru, which were worshiped personally by Madhvacarya. This Deity is said to have been given to him by Vedavyasa.
The Adi-Subramanya Temple is about 250m north of the outer wall of the Subramanya Temple. It is believed that you have to visit this temple to get the benefit of pilgrimage to Subramanya. The Kumaradhara River is a sacred river. Skin diseases are supposed to be cured by bathing in this river. On the way from the temple to the Kumaradhara River there is a cave called Biladwara where the serpent Vukiki is saido be hiding so he will not fall prey to Garuda. There is a south and north path into the cave. Everyone enters the cave from the south tunnel, but it is inaccessible during the rainy season. No one goes through the north tunnel because it is infested with bats.
Southeast of the Subramanya Temple is an ashram called Subramanya Math established by Madhvacarya.
Madhvacharya/s brother, Vishnu Tirtha, preached here. Sri Madhvacarya is stated to have received this Math from Bhatta Sannyasi, whom he defeated in a philosophical debate. This Math and the Deities of Vyasa, Vitthala and Samputa Tirtha, the brother of Madhvacharya. Sankaracharya also visited here. There is a Sringeri Mutt northeast of the Subramanya Temple. The deity in this temple is Chandranauleswara.
