Devi Durga is said to have vanquished demon Durgama on the hill Kanakasaila, which houses the magnificent shrine of Devi Kanaka Durga. The Pandavas had stayed on the hills here during their exile. They had the darshan and blessings of Veda Vyasa and Indra, the King of Devas. Indra ordained Arjuna to do penance on Indrakila Hill to propitiate Lord Shiva to get the Paasupata Astra. When Arjuna did tapas, Lord Shiva came as a hunter to test him. Devi Parvati and the Bhootaganas also accompanied the Lord. Arjuna saw a wild boar in front of him and shot an arrow at the animal. At this same time, the boar was hit by another arrow. This angered Arjuna, who found a tribal hunter before him. Both claimed ownership of the dead boar. Soon an argument ensued between them and they ended up wrestling (mal yuddha, which apparently gave the Lord the name Malleshwara). Arjunas pride was hurt. He prayed to Lord Shiva and found to his surprise that the flowers that he offered to the Linga were found on the hunters feet. Arjuna realised that the hunter was none other than Lord Shiva Himself. The hunter revealed his true form of Lord Shiva and Arjuna fell at His feet. The Lord offered Arjuna the Paasupata Astra and blessed him for his victory in the forthcoming war. Since Arjuna has another name Vijaya, this place came to be known as Vijayawada.
