To reach Kedarnath, one has to follow the Alaknanda and come back to Rudraprayag at the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

Following the Mandakini from Rudraprayag, one reaches Gaurikund by evening, where there are rest houses and dharamshalas. From here, one has to either trek or ride a mule to Kedarnath, situated at an altitude of 1 1,750 feet. The ascent from Gaurikund is reasonably steep, being a little over 5,000 feet. There are chattis on the way where one can spend the night. Those who are not acclimatized to the cold, however, are advised to spend the night at Rambada.
